Spice Board Registration {as Exporter of Spices (CRES)}

The Spices Board {Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India} is an organization that works to develop and promote Indian Spices globally. The Board serves as a link between the Indian exporter of spices and the importers abroad. Additionally, the Spices Board is the driving force behind the activities for excellence of Indian Spices and the achievements of every segment of this industry.

The Spices Board is the regulatory body of the Government of India that promotes Indian Spices in the global market. The body was constituted in 1987 with the merger with former Cardamom Board 1968 and Spices Export Promotion Council, 1960. The responsibility of the Board is to provide supervision on the development and promotion of Cardamom and 52 other spices listed in the Schedule of the Spices Board Act, 1986.

Furthermore, the Board is responsible for granting certificate to the person or entity who wishes to involve in or start a work that includes spices. Also, the Board issues the Certificate of Registration as Exporter of Spices {CRES} under section 11 of the Spice Board Act, 1986.

Importance of Spice Board Registration

Having a certificate of registration with the Spice board is necessary for anyone who is dealing with export of spices. Also, the Spices Board Act, 1986 states that “No person shall, after the commencement of this Act, commence or carry on the business of export of any spice under and in accordance with a certificate. Provided that a person is carrying on the business of export of spices immediately before the commencement, and if he has made an application for such certificate with the said period of three months till the disposal of such application.”

Renewal of Certificate of Registration as Exporter of Spices {CRES}

The validity of certificate of registration is three years from the block period. Any person who wishes to renew their Certificate as Exporter needs to submit an application in the Form-1 to the authority. Also, it is provided that it is liable each month if anyone fails to apply for renewal of their license before its expiry. The renewal fees is same as fresh application fees from the year 2018.

Furthermore, the issuing authority does not accept applications after 31st August. Exporters who fail to apply for renewal of their licenses have to apply for a fresh license/registration after the expiry of their certificate.

It is also provided for the exporters who do not carry on any export business during the period in which he holds a valid certificate, the renewal of a certificate as exporter for the next three years is not considered in such case. However, if such an exporter enters into an export contract, he can apply for a new certificate to the Spices Board.
